Over the past 25 years, Shake-A-Leg Miami, in partnership with the City of Miami, has become one of the country's premiere community centers and a global hub for sailing enthusiasts of all ages, people with disabilities, disabled veterans and, of course, the general public. More than 10,000 people (3,000 of whom are youth and/or disabled) participate in Shake-A-Leg activities and programs each year, all of which are held in an inclusive and empowering setting.
On September 10th, Hurricane Irma slammed into the Miami waterfront and Coconut Grove, completely destroying Shake-A-Leg's dock and fleet of handicapped-accessible sailboats. Our boat ramp, davit, building and Bay Walk were also badly damaged. The cost to get back up and running is estimated to be approximately $1.4 Million. We have raised $900,000 with $500,000 to go and hoping for $125,000 from the event. The response so far has been heartwarming, but we still have a ways to go.
